Overview

The Rites of Passage Camp hosted by the Wanderland Society, a Georgia-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is meticulously designed to address the cultural and social needs of young men aged 14 - 19 years old. This one-day immersive experience provides a practical, primitive framework that aims to connect these young men not only with each other but also with the broader context of becoming successful men in Western civilization.

Goals

Building a Sense of Belonging: The camp intends to instill a profound sense of belonging and connection within a community of positivity, support, and understanding. It serves as a pivotal moment for these young men as they embark on a new phase in their lives.

Connecting with a Network : Fostering connections allows for the development of wisdom, compassion, strength, and an understanding of life's complexities. This interaction helps the younger generation overcome their fears and uncertainties.

Appreciating Nature: The camp aims to cultivate an appreciation for natural sacred spaces, encouraging the young men to cherish and respect the untouched charm of the land.

Developing Trust while we Grow : It is essential for the participants to grasp the path that lies ahead as they transition into adulthood. The camp offers valuable insights into the responsibilities and opportunities of manhood.

Activity Overview

The Rites of passage camp at Wanderland encompasses the following:

The Truth of our understanding - Each young man shares a personal truth that they have discovered throughout their lives. This exercise promotes authenticity and self-reflection.

The Trust Walk - A group challenge where young men navigate a 50-acre uncharted forest, each assigned a crucial role. They must work together, relying on their unique skills to succeed.

Keeping The Flame, protection of home, providing for home - Participants learn to start and maintain a campfire, fostering teamwork, and passing down life lessons during evening gatherings. On occasions, the group will be challenged to contribute to the meal in a memorable way.

Connecting with one another around the fire- The Five C’s of Survivability are introduced, teaching important life skills, and fostering relationships and networks among the group. The five C’s of Survivability are :

  • Covering - Protection to keep your core temperature regulated / Protecting yourself

  • Containers - Protection of resources / Safeguarding tomorrow

  • Cutlery - Knives and tools used to manipulate objects / Problem solving

  • Combustion - Tools to create fire / Growing an idea

  • Cordage - Cords that bind objects together / The work of growing relationships and networks

Passing the Torch, Be light - This final lesson imparts the impact each young man can have on the world. It culminates with the passing of a torch from one generation to the next, symbolizing the transmission of knowledge and wisdom.
